Awards & Nominations:
  • ICE® won the 2008 IACP Award of Excellence in the Vocational Cooking School category
  • Six ICE® alumni were nominated for 2008 James Beard Awards, announced in June in New York City. Semi-finalists include Chefs Joseph Wrede (Taos), Allison Vines-Rushing (New Orleans), Rachel Yang (Seattle), Kendal Duque (Chicago); and finalists include Chef Gina DePalma (NYC) and author Trish Magwood (Toronto). Magwood was the winner in her category.
  • ICE alumnus Colin Alevras (The Tasting Room, New York) was nominated by Time Out New York for their "Best Chef Who Actually Cooks in Their Restaurant" Award.
News & Events:
  • Pastry Art & Design hosted the 2008 edition of its Ten Best Pastry Chefs in America awards at ICE. New York chefs being honored included ICE alum Elisa Strauss (2000), Deborah Racicot of Gotham Bar & Grill, NYC, Sébastien Rouxel of per se, and Alex Stupak of wd~50.
  • Food Arts magazine noted ICE as the location for the 1st Annual Peanut Buttery Dessert Contest, hosted with Peanut Butter & Co. founder and president, Lee Zalben.
  • The Daily News and the Epoch Times covered the 3rd Annual Sidewalk Café Drink Mix-off hosted by ICE.
  • Discover Flatiron highlighted ICE, its rich 33-year history, and its president, Rick Smilow.
  • AirTran Airways magazine featured ICE as a perfect gourmet getaway in an article titled as such.
  • ICE President Rick Smilow was quoted in a San Jose Mercury News article on career changers attending culinary school.
ICE® on TV:
  • Anne Burrell, executive chef of Centro and former ICE chef-instructor, launched Secrets of a Restaurant Chef on the Food Network.
  • ICE alumnus, Matthew Sigel, was a contestant on Hell's Kitchen on Fox
  • ICE® alumna Gail Simmons resumes her role as a co-host and judge on BRAVO TV's Top Chef.
Chef-Instructor and Student News:
  • ICE Chef-Instructor Norman Weinstein, author of the newly released Mastering Knife Skills (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), was featured in a Newsday piece on knife skills.
  • ICE Director of Culinary Arts Michael Handal was featured in the Daily News, in which he talked about condiments.
  • Michael Zmigrodski and Michael Dulle, two culinary students, won Aspire Scholarships awarded by the New York chapter of the American Institute of Wine and Food. Each received $1000.
  • The New York Sun's "A Taste of Summer" feature included ICE's cupcake walking tours led by Chef-Instructor Melanie Underwood and Chef-Instructor Richard Ruben's walking tours/cooking classes at the Union Square Greenmarket.
  • Among many events this late spring and summer, dozens of students volunteered at the James Beard Awards; Citymeals-on-Wheels Gala; Adventures in the Global Kitchen: Wine and Culture; Share our Strength Taste of the Nation; Eat Drink and Be Hopeful: American Cancer Society; New Taste of the Upper West Side; Chefs' Night Out; Big Apple Barbecue; Ten Best Pastry Chefs; Restaurants Against Hunger; Spanish Pavilion at the Fancy Food Show; and Celebrate Flatiron Chefs Madison Square Park.
  • Five students participated in a cupcake contest at the New York Fancy Food Show, held by Country Living Heritage Series to celebrate the launch of its new line of dry mixes. Shawona Jones won best overall as well as best traditional cupcake. She will be featured in a spread in Country Living. Ramona Carvajal won best mouthwatering cupcake and Minnie (Lisa) Bellomo won best creative cupcake. All three students will be featured on the magazine's website.
  • Students also participated in culinary contests that included Diamond Crystal Seasoned Chef 2008 Recipe Contest, Norcliff Farms, Inc. Fiddlehead Greens Culinary Challenge, and Splenda Splendido Contest.
